American Roofing & Metal and Steinrock Roofing won a prestigious national award in the roofing industry for steep-slope roofing, under the direction of brothers Rick and Tim Steinrock. They spearheaded the most recent restoration of the Fayette County Courthouse by completely replacing the almost 100-year-old slate and copper roof. The project lasted nearly 8 months, during which almost 17,000 sq. feet of slate was removed and replaced with all new slate and copper details.

American Roofing & Metal Co. Inc. was instrumental in this award-winning renovation, tackling the complex restoration of the slate roof and its underlying structure. The project began with significant structural repairs, which involved installing a new ¾-inch-thick layer of plywood over the roof deck. To ensure a modern, protective seal, a polymer-modified bitumen base sheet was applied as a durable underlayment. Following this, the crew enhanced the building’s insulation by installing two separate layers of 2-inch-thick polyisocyanurate, providing a robust thermal barrier over the newly fortified roof deck.

The most significant challenge American Roofing & Metal faced was the installation of the new slate system on the dome’s nearly vertical surfaces. To overcome this, their team engineered an innovative solution by first installing vertical 1x4s from top to bottom, followed by a second layer of 1x4s that was both glued and screwed into place for maximum stability. Upon this reinforced frame, three layers of 3/8-inch-thick plywood were installed, creating a solid foundation. Finally, after applying another underlayment, the team meticulously installed the Buckingham Slate, completing the roof’s stunning and durable restoration.
